Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. New Balance 574 Rosse Bambino .ca. Hi Kerry, Are the referees required to make a call on the ice before going to the replay official? I have noticed a couple of times in recent months where the ref doesnt seem to make any call at all, and then goes upstairs. I was under the impression the referee had to gesture good goal/no goal before confirming via replay. A great recent example is from the Montreal Canadiens/Columbus Blue Jackets game on Wednesday. Brendan Gallagher tipped a puck that was very close to crossing the line. In a replay, you can see the referee gesture towards the net as it appeared he was beginning to signal a goal - but then stopped and made no signal. After an inconclusive review, it was called a no goal. What is the correct procedure for making a call on the ice, and is referee hesitation to make a call a potential problem with our current state of review technology? Thanks, Scott Scott, Referees are required to make a decision (goal or no goal) prior to communicating with the Situation Room in Toronto. It is certainly most desirable if the referee closest to the play has a good look and is decisive. However, if the ref on the goal-line demonstrates uncertainty by not making a clear signal, the crew of officials should and will gather for a conference at the timekeepers bench to make a collective decision. Once a decision has been reached, the referee that was responsible for making the initial call is handed the headset. The first words he will communicate to Toronto are, We have a good goal (or no goal) on the ice. At that point, the play is turned over to Video Review to render a decision through conclusive video evidence. If they are unable to do so, the call is returned to the officials on the ice and their decision will stand. On the Brendan Gallagher tip, the referee most likely flinched in anticipation of the puck entering the goal. The ref was less likely to determine if the puck crossed the line as a result of his distant sightline while moving toward the net from the deep corner. The Situation Room did in fact return a conclusive verdict that the puck did not completely cross the goal-line. Based on the replays shown on the Situation Room blog, I completely concur with this decision. MTL @ CBJ - 14:59 of the First Period Wednesday, 01.14.2015 / 7:49 PM 2014-2015 Situation Room blog What this play does highlight, Scott, is not so much a problem with our current state of reviewing technology but moreso the need for better coaching and monitoring of the officials relative to their positioning philosophy. On this play, the referee was frozen in the corner too long after the turnover up near the blue line and a cycle distributed the puck quickly to the net from the hash mark off the stick of Tomas Plekanec. As a result of some puck watching (focus on Plekanec), the referee picked up the fact that Gallagher was a primary outlet too late as the Montreal sparkplug attacked the net for the redirect. If the referee had been aware of Gallaghers location on the ice, he would have moved off the wall and drove to the net the instant the puck left Plekanecs stick. While there is no guarantee that the referee could have seen if the puck crossed the line due to a potentially obstructed view created by Sergei Bobrovskys pads, the closer proximity to the net would likely have resulted in not only a better viewing location but a more definitive signal. A referees bread and butter is being at the net on close plays. A better job is needed to bring some of the current crop to the table. Asics Gel Lyte Iii Shop Online . On the day Louis van Gaal announced his final 23-man squad for Brazil, the Netherlands coach looked to have picked his strongest side for the match at Feyenoords De Kuip stadium, with the vastly experienced striking partnership of Van Persie and Arjen Robben fed by playmaker Wesley Sneijder.DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Defending champion Novak Djokovic needed less than an hour to advance at the Dubai Championships on Wednesday, while Roger Federer faced a struggle to seal his place in the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Djokovic swept to a 6-1, 6-3 win over 51st-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in just 57 minutes, but fourth-seeded Federer had to see off a serious challenge from 48th-ranked Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic before coming through 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3. "I have done really well today from the first to the last point," Djokovic said. "There was no major ups and downs, especially with the serve that helped me to win comfortably my service games, a lot of free points." In the first set, Djokovic raced to a 5-0 lead before Bautista Agut held serve to win his only game in the set. The only hiccup Djokovic had in the second set was when serving for the match at 5-2. He dropped his serve in that game but broke serve in the next to close out the match. Djokovic will play sixth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who beat British wildcard recipient James Ward 6-1, 7-6 (3). Federer came into his two hour, eight minute match with a 12-2 winning record over Stepanek. Hes now won their last nine meetings dating back to the 2008 Rome quarterfinals. "I got broken four times which is difficult, but its good to win those type of matches," said Federer, who faced eight break points against his serve. "Im happy to get through. "It didnt look good there for a while, but I got it done." Federer handled the first set with confidence, but started to falter as Stepanek became more aggressive in the second set. Federer managed to rebound from 4-2 down in the second set to force a tiebreaker -- where Stepanekk raced into a 6-2 and a first set point when Federer double faulted. Asics Gel Saga Prezzo. Stepanek won the set on his third set point when Federer netted a forehand. Stepanek also took an early 2-0 lead in the third set, but Federer rebounded to go ahead 5-2 to serve for the match. Federers serve was broken when he double faulted in the eighth game. Stepanek, however, surrendered his serve in the next game to allow Federer to move into the quarterfinals. Hell now face another Czech player in Lukas Rosol, who upset eighth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (4). "Today was quite frustrating," Federer said. "I had momentum on my side at the beginning, but it was tough to keep it going. "After the first set I was under pressure the entire match." Like Djokovic, third-seeded Tomas Berdych had an easy path to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine. Berdych, who will face fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals, has won his last eight matches. Despite Berdych having trouble with his first serve -- his percentage was a ghastly 37 per cent -- he controlled the match. He lost his serve once, and won 12 of the last 14 points. "I was working a little more on my return stats than on my service stats," Berdych said. "The main focus really for the next days is to get my percentage of the first serve back and really find a nice and sweet rhythm for my serve." Tsonga won his second-round match by walkover when his opponent, Nikolay Davydenko, withdrew with a rib injury. Seventh-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Andrea Seppi of Italy. Kohlschreiber will play Tunisian wild card Malek Jaziri, who beat Somdev Devvarman of India 6-3, 7-5.
